Steven O’Connor joined Carlson and Carlson in September, 2015 after a distinguished academic career at the University of Colorado Law School where he was a member of the National Mock Trial team, Chair of the James R. Carrigan Cup, and a student attorney with the University’s Civil Practice Clinic, taught by the renowned Professor Norman Aaronson.
Steven has and continues to focus primarily on family law cases. Steven has worked for various agencies and organizations in Chicago’s dedicated Domestic Violence Courthouse, including for the Domestic Violence Legal Clinic, as a “senior law student.” In that role, Steven argued cases to the bench on a daily basis, successfully obtaining civil orders of protection for survivors of domestic violence. Steven also has experience in contested dissolution of marriage proceedings, as well as criminal jury work.
Steven has advanced experience with family law, trial advocacy, domestic violence, and the art and practice of legal negotiation. Steven was one of three members of his graduating class to be awarded the University of Colorado Law School’s Family Law Certificate.
Steven joined Carlson and Carlson based largely in part on the firm’s commitment to a children first approach, and the opportunity to work side by side with the firm’s founding members.
Steven understands the complex emotional issues that necessarily factor into every case. Steven believes that, when possible, parties can and should work together to settle their case at mediation, or among one another. By actively working to keep clients and cases out of court, Steven believes parties can come to more unique, mutually beneficial solutions. However, Steven has proven himself as an aggressive litigator, and is fully capable of advocating for clients in court in front of both judge and jury.
When not in the office, Steven is an avid skier, hiker, sailor, and occasional hunter. Steven lives in Frisco with his fiancé Ashley, and German Wirehaired Pointer, Nixon.
